In November I experienced vivid memories of one of my few art successes in my life: high school. As I recall, our art teacher had given us an assignment to draw, without lifting our pencil once, a continuous line of creating a feather. We’d each been given a feather and even though I doubted I’d do very well, somehow, I managed to create a perfect feather pencil drawing. I was astounded.

I kept that line art for a very long time.

This November I vividly remembered this singular art success, and I wanted to revisit feathers with my watercolor. But I had a new focus. As I’ve been painting I’ve been fascinated with how color disperses in water. And I even heard a fellow artist say about an art teacher with watercolor: “Let the water do the painting.”

At the same time, I’ve also been remembering Masaru Emoto and his scientific research of photographing the effects of conscious thoughts on the formation of water crystals.

I’ve brought these two ideas together into my watercolor: to allow as much as possible, the water to do the painting while also holding conscious thoughts of more positive water crystal formations.

Then, this memory of my perfect feather drawing paired with allowing the water to do that painting and holding higher vibrational thought for the colored water crystals, that’s when the painting technique landed for the Angel Wing images that I’m painting here.

You’ll see that I use the width of the brush, the intensity of the color and the dispersion of the water to draw the outline of the feather. You’ll also see that I use a smaller brush to pick up color and water in the center of the feather to create the visual backbone of the feather line. And then you’ll see how I use the excess color and water to draw out the minute feather lines, creating the larger feather.

Once I’m done, the combined techniques create quite a powerful image. And image of feathers come down from the heavens: Angel Feathers.
